It examines the town’s geography, urban layout, and defensive features, highlighting debates over the presence of walls and the mix of huts and masonry buildings. Special attention is given to the al-Zaylaʿī mosque complex and the city’s economic role as a Red Sea port involved in coffee trade, despite environmental constraints and political instability.
