This contribution demonstrates how the Declamationes Minores, which are attributed to Quintilian, use Seneca's tragic and philosophical texts for didactic purposes in schools of rhetoric. These texts are used to model characters and develop argumentative strategies that are useful for constructing effective, persuasive speeches. Seneca's texts are used as a veritable 'repository' of tragic models (heroic figures and paradigms of emotional expression), as well as a philosophical and moral repertoire from which ethical concepts and topoi can be drawn. The extensive use of Seneca's work as a rhetorical laboratory for the technical training of pupils allows the editors of the Minores to use his text to resolve problems of textual criticism in some cases.

Abstract
This contribution demonstrates how the Declamationes Minores, which are attributed to Quintilian, use Seneca's tragic and philosophical texts for didactic purposes in schools of rhetoric. These texts are used to model characters and develop argumentative strategies that are useful for constructing effective, persuasive speeches. Seneca's texts are used as a veritable 'repository' of tragic models (heroic figures and paradigms of emotional expression), as well as a philosophical and moral repertoire from which ethical concepts and topoi can be drawn. The extensive use of Seneca's work as a rhetorical laboratory for the technical training of pupils allows the editors of the Minores to use his text to resolve problems of textual criticism in some cases.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
