The concept of class is the elephant in the feminist room. It is always there, but it’s not mentioned very often. In many ways, feminist movements from the very outset have been an attempt to overcome class divisions, namely, to unite women from different social backgrounds under the same roof. All women, after all, experience forms of violence and oppression – within and outside the home – which are specific to women as women, or to those who identify as women.

Abstract

The concept of class is the elephant in the feminist room. It is always there, but it’s not mentioned very often. In many ways, feminist movements from the very outset have been an attempt to overcome class divisions, namely, to unite women from different social backgrounds under the same roof. All women, after all, experience forms of violence and oppression – within and outside the home – which are specific to women as women, or to those who identify as women.
