A FLEXIBLE IDENTITY: THE MEMORY OF THE ORIGINS OF SAN SALVATORE OF BRESCIA BETWEEN THE LOMBARDS AND THE CAROLINGIANS (9TH TO 12TH CENTURIES) The essay analyses the variable construction of the memory of the female monastic community of San Salvatore, later Santa Giulia, in Brescia, between the ninth and the twelfth centuries. This memory never found expression in explicit hagiographical or historiographical narratives but can instead be discerned from royal and papal documentation issued in line with the collection of previous privileges that the community presented at each renewal. Particularly, the recollection of its Lombard royal origins, centred on the figures of a pious queen, Ansa, and her daughter Anselperga, the first abbess of the community, appears to be the result of a deliberate choice made in the mid-eleventh century. This choice aimed to construct an alternative identity for the monastery, distinct from the one directly tied to imperial authority

Abstract
This choice aimed to construct an alternative identity for the monastery, distinct from the one directly tied to imperial authorityI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
