This article examines the transformation of Chinese calligraphy through the experimental ink practice of Wang Dongling. His work is presented as a paradigm of Chinese contemporary calligraphy’s blend between tradition and innovation. The study follows three main trajectories. In considers cross-cultural exchange, performative experimentation, and digital expansion. Through these practices, Wang redefines calligraphy as an expressive and communicative art form. His works, from Dance (1989) to VR – Wandering Beyond (2021) embody a synthesis of brush gesture, bodily movement, and technology, transforming calligraphy into immersive visual experiences. Methodologically, the research combines formal and stylistic analysis with linguistic and textual examination. It integrates art theory, performance studies, and digital aesthetics. Primary sources and artist statements support the interpretation. The study shows how contemporary calligraphy expands the limits of the medium, bridging material and virtual realms. It redefines writing as spatial, performative, and technological practice. In this way, calligraphy is repositioned within global contemporary art discourses as an evolving visual language.
