Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects more than 250 million people and represents the leading cause of disability worldwide. Depression should not be considered anymore a homogeneous affective syndrome; in fact, it is characterized by emotional, physical, motor, and cognitive symptom dimensions. In order to personalize the treatment according to the recovery-oriented model it is essential to acknowledge the symptom complexity of depression, in order to provide the patients a tailored and integrated approach, including pharmacological, psychological, and psychosocial interventions. A shared decision-making style should be adopted and patients’ preferences should be taken into account when deciding the “best” treatment for each individual patient. The ultimate goal of treatment of MDD should be a complete and long-term clinical, functional, and personal recovery of patients.
