Manfredo Tafuri warned, in the Preface to his History of Italian Architecture 1944–1985, of the difficulties inherent in addressing contemporary architecture, and of the risks involved in undertaking critical analysis of objects that are temporally too close to us and that have not yet “completed their cycle.” With regard to such objects, it would be necessary to construct artificial distances, useful for ensuring a judgment untainted by historical proximity and capable of silencing the background noise that surrounds them. If interpreting these works historically presents significant challenges, examining contemporary architecture—recent works or those otherwise close to our own time—from a perspective aimed at ensuring their conservation is an even more complex and risk-laden endeavor. Decisions concerning their safeguarding must take into account not only their present qualities, but also the requirements related to their continued use, maintaining a balance between the demands of protecting their physical fabric and the constantly evolving needs expressed by users, who are often unable to perceive the characteristics that render such works distinctive in terms of their heritage and testimonial value. Through the presentation of case studies, this contribution develops a reflection on the legitimacy of conserving contemporary works and on the limits of the activity of conservation professionals in the field of contemporary heritage.

Abstract
Through the presentation of case studies, this contribution develops a reflection on the legitimacy of conserving contemporary works and on the limits of the activity of conservation professionals in the field of contemporary heritage.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
