Narrating War through Dance. The Case of Sri Lankan Tamils/Raccontare la guerra attraverso la danza: il caso dei tamil srilankesi

After an overview of the relationship between choreographic practices and the theme of war, the article reflects on a specific case of using dance as a tool to narrate war: in the context of the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora, a classical Indian dance style, bharata natyam - created to illustrate stories related to the gods - has been “actualized” in order to tell the story of the conflict that bloodied Sri Lanka between 1983 and 2009. The mudras (hand gestures) of the classical repertoire have, in fact, been supplemented by new mudras (the helicopter, the bomb, the rifle) that allow the tragic events of contemporary times to be staged.

Dopo una panoramica sul rapporto tra pratiche coreutiche e tema della guerra, l’articolo riflette su un caso specifico di utilizzo della danza come strumento per narrare la guerra: nel contesto della diaspora tamil srilankese uno stile di danza classica indiana, il bharata natyam - nato per illustrare storie relative agli dèi - è stato “attualizzato” per poter raccontare il conflitto che ha insanguinato lo Sri Lanka tra il 1983 e il 2009. Alle mudra (gesti delle mani) del repertorio classico sono state infatti aggiunte nuove mudra (l’elicottero, la bomba, il fucile) che permettono di mettere in scena i tragici eventi della contemporaneità.
