This study focuses on second generation students (aged 6-7-8) of Chinese origin living in Italy. To investigate what factors influence their language practices and perceptions, the main agents of their social network (i.e. parents and school agents) were also involved. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews, and the contents underwent thematic analysis. By observing the children’s relationship with their linguistic repertoire, families’ bond with Chinese language(s) and Italian, and language policies and attitudes among families and schools, this contribution reflects on the important role of language in speakers’ perception of both themselves and their social participation. In fact, especially in contexts of migration, a lack of proficiency in the dominant language may lead to communication difficulties such as affecting interpersonal relationships and individual identity perceptions.

Abstract
This study focuses on second generation students (aged 6-7-8) of Chinese origin living in Italy. To investigate what factors influence their language practices and perceptions, the main agents of their social network (i.e. parents and school agents) were also involved. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews, and the contents underwent thematic analysis. By observing the children’s relationship with their linguistic repertoire, families’ bond with Chinese language(s) and Italian, and language policies and attitudes among families and schools, this contribution reflects on the important role of language in speakers’ perception of both themselves and their social participation. In fact, especially in contexts of migration, a lack of proficiency in the dominant language may lead to communication difficulties such as affecting interpersonal relationships and individual identity perceptions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
