The monumental entrance of the praetorium in Gortyn (Crete). Architectural development and urban role

This study investigates the monumental access to the Praetorium of Gortyn (Crete), focusing on architectural elements and associated challenges. In the mid-4th century, the area featured distinct structures of the Praetorium, including the Skrinion and the Judicial Basilica, yet details regarding its architecture and entrance remain elusive. The absence of clear architectural parallels complicates reconstruction efforts. Evidence suggests a north-western entrance from the late 4th century, likely oriented towards Pythion’ Sanctuary Square (the so-called Dositeo's entry). The new examination includes the facades both western and eastern sides of the West Street of the Praetorium Quarter. This exploration aims to enhance understanding of the “diffuse” building complex's architectural tipology and spatial organization.
