In the essay From Literacy to New Literacies: A Theoretical and Evolutionary Framework, Pier Cesare Rivoltella traces the conceptual development of the notion of “literacy,” highlighting the shift from a functional understanding of basic reading and writing skills to a plural and dynamic perspective embodied in the concept of New Literacies. The author argues that the transformation of media and digital environments has reshaped not only reading and writing practices but also the ways knowledge is produced, shared, and validated. The chapter provides a theoretical framework that integrates media education studies, participatory culture, and digital citizenship, emphasizing the situated, social, and multimodal nature of contemporary competencies. New Literacies are presented as transversal skills encompassing critical, ethical, and collaborative dimensions alongside technical proficiency. Within this evolutionary perspective, schools are invited to rethink curricula, methodologies, and assessment practices, moving beyond a purely instrumental view of technology toward a pedagogical approach capable of fostering competent, reflective, and responsible individuals in today’s digital information ecosystem.

Abstract
Within this evolutionary perspective, schools are invited to rethink curricula, methodologies, and assessment practices, moving beyond a purely instrumental view of technology toward a pedagogical approach capable of fostering competent, reflective, and responsible individuals in today’s digital information ecosystem.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
