By retracing the intellectual development of the Friulian jurist – from his abolitionist engagement to his appointment at the University of Bologna – the study focuses in particular on his refusal of the Roman appointment in 1872, interpreted as an expression of intellectual autonomy and a rejection of Savoyard centralism.
