This chapter focuses on the relation between surviving oracles on Syracuse’s foundation (PW 2 and 229) and fragmentary historical traditions on the same event. The two oracles date from different periods and their relationship with the so-called Archias’ novel is complex. All this material likely found its way into a single narration, possibly Timaeus’ one, and Pheidon of Argus’ involvement presupposes Ephorus’ dating of his rule. Remnants of earlier traditions can be identified as well.

Abstract
This chapter focuses on the relation between surviving oracles on Syracuse’s foundation (PW 2 and 229) and fragmentary historical traditions on the same event. The two oracles date from different periods and their relationship with the so-called Archias’ novel is complex. All this material likely found its way into a single narration, possibly Timaeus’ one, and Pheidon of Argus’ involvement presupposes Ephorus’ dating of his rule. Remnants of earlier traditions can be identified as well.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
