Tourism represents a leading sector in translation practice and, especially in the context of tourist websites, the potential for neural machine translation (NMT) and machine translation (MT) is now exploding with repercussions and ramifications that are not yet clear. Within this context, this paper intends to provide some experimental evidence about training students in tourism translation. This paper is a progress report on the incremental use of (N)MT tools (among others Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Bing Translator and DeepL) in an Italian University course on English for Special Purposes and translation focusing on the language of Tourism and entails the analysis and error tagging of students’ translations coupled with insights from a survey distributed among them after completing their translation task.
