Data are essential for understanding, modeling, and managing human–water systems and their dynamics. Despite significant advancements in the acquisition, management, use, and free accessibility of data, there are still challenges associated with human–water systems data, including, e.g., high heterogeneity, scarcity, discrepancies in data volume and information, uncertainty, or equity issues. This chapter presents examples of how these challenges are being addressed in different human–water systems and how novel and emerging data sources and acquisition methods can help.

Abstract

Data are essential for understanding, modeling, and managing human–water systems and their dynamics. Despite significant advancements in the acquisition, management, use, and free accessibility of data, there are still challenges associated with human–water systems data, including, e.g., high heterogeneity, scarcity, discrepancies in data volume and information, uncertainty, or equity issues. This chapter presents examples of how these challenges are being addressed in different human–water systems and how novel and emerging data sources and acquisition methods can help.
