In this chapter, we introduce the concept of Satellite Communications and their evolution into non-terrestrial networks (NTN), discussing the main technical and economic drivers for such transformation. Then, the standardization of NTN in the framework of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is extensively discussed starting from the initial study phase in Releases 15 and 16 to the currently ongoing definition of Rel. 19, as well as a glimpse at what future releases developing 6G NTN might look like. Spectrum allocations and resources are also thoroughly reviewed and discussed.
