Globalization has made our societies more multilingual than ever. Consequently, language education needs to address multilingualism and promote intercultural communication. Based on research on Japanese pedagogy conducted in the United States, this study demonstrates the crucial role that translation activities and translanguaging practices play in effective interculturally oriented language teaching. It highlights how dynamic methodologies that integrate communication, translation, and translanguaging can facilitate students’ development of greater awareness of linguistic-cultural diversity, as well as foster new forms of sensitivity and subjectivity that are shaped by different cultural contexts. The implication of this study is the need to explore more broadly and thoroughly the application of translation and translanguaging in interculturally oriented teaching of Japanese in Italy.

Abstract
