This volume explores the definition of social, political, religious, cultural and sexual identities in 18th-century Europe, taking into account various disciplinary perspectives that combine historical and art-historical methods with those of literary inquiry. The case studies examined here demonstrate how the sphere of institutional activities constantly intertwines with the more intimate dimension of self-representation. The demands made by individuals and groups alike succeeded in tangibly influencing the very principle of authority, setting in motion a mechanism of negotiation between norms and practice.
