This database contains a catalog of the correspondence of Sebastian Tengnagel (d. 1636), prefect of the court library in Vienna, as preserved in four manuscripts held at the Austrian National Library (9737q, 9737r, 9737s, 9737t). The descriptions of approximately 700 letters were created between 2018 and 2024 by Chiara Petrolini, with contributions from Maria Benauer and Thomas Wallnig. Dario Kampkaspar assisted with data conversion, and the PHAIDRA team handled the data ingestion and developed the user interface. The data forms the basis of the multi-authored book The Oriental Outpost of the Republic of Letters, in which the letters are extensively used and discussed. The database complements the volume, along with a collection of manuscipt descriptions related to Tengnagel. The individual (TEI) files do not contain transcriptions but provide basic metadata, including references to people, places, and works mentioned in the letters. While the data on "people" is considered complete, the information on "places" and especially on "works" is known to be incomplete and, at times, approximate. Rather than serving as a consistent index, these references are intended as a guide for further research. An unpolished "work version" of the same TEI files, containing partial transcriptions (including Tengnagel's reception notes) and unverified notes collected during the research process, is available upon request.
