Ai confini delle categorie e ritorno: dall’approssimazione alla prototipicità

The contribution explores the continuous space that connects the center of conceptual categories to their periphery, focusing on the notions of approximation and prototypicality, understood as two values of evaluative semantics. The study examines two reduplicative constructions in Italian that express these two contrasting functions: the discontinuous reduplication Ni-non-Ni (e.g., “bomboniere-non-bomboniere”), which expresses deviation from the prototype, and the contiguous reduplication Ni-Ni (e.g., “caffè-caffè”), which expresses prototypicality. A double test is used to investigate the semantic-creative potential of the two constructions independently of context, using the qualia structure as a starting point to elicit possible interpretations. The experiment returns a complex picture – with a plurality of interpretative paths (which go well beyond the dimensions traced by qualia), mostly divergent in the two cases (suggesting different mechanisms for deviation towards the boundaries of the category and “return” to the prototype) – and identifies some factors to be investigated more thoroughly in future studies.

Il contributo esplora lo spazio continuo che collega il centro delle categorie concettuali alla loro periferia, concentrandosi sulle nozioni di approssimazione e di prototipicità, intese come due valori della semantica valutativa. Lo studio prende in esame due costruzioni reduplicative in italiano che esprimono queste due funzioni contrapposte: la reduplicazione discontinua Ni-non-Ni (es. "bomboniere-non-bomboniere"), che esprime deviazione dal prototipo, e la reduplicazione contigua Ni-Ni (es. "caffè-caffè"), che esprime invece prototipicità. Un doppio test è utilizzato per indagare il potenziale semantico-creativo delle due costruzioni indipendentemente dal contesto, utilizzando la struttura qualia come punto di partenza per elicitare le possibili interpretazioni. L’esperimento restituisce un quadro complesso – con una pluralità di percorsi interpretativi (che vanno ben oltre le dimensioni tracciate dai qualia), per lo più divergenti nei due casi (suggerendo meccanismi diversi per deviazione verso i confini della categoria e “ritorno” al prototipo) – e identifica alcuni fattori da indagare più approfonditamente in studi futuri.
