The summer monsoons are the rainy seasons observed globally in the subtropics and tropics. In this chapter, we introduce their fundamental drivers and briefly summarize current theoretical understanding of these complex systems. We then present a review of the specific features and processes governing the observed climatology and variability of the regional monsoon systems. Links to other elements of the climate system, such as the intraseasonal oscillations, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and anthropogenic forcings are discussed.

Abstract

The summer monsoons are the rainy seasons observed globally in the subtropics and tropics. In this chapter, we introduce their fundamental drivers and briefly summarize current theoretical understanding of these complex systems. We then present a review of the specific features and processes governing the observed climatology and variability of the regional monsoon systems. Links to other elements of the climate system, such as the intraseasonal oscillations, El Niño-Southern Oscillation, and anthropogenic forcings are discussed.
