Framing Anti-Corruption Under Occupation: The Case of AMAN—Transparency in Palestine

The chapter investigates how civil society actors frame Societal Accountability (SA) in non-democratic contexts. In particular, it examines the challenges of addressing corruption in Palestine, a context characterized by fragile democratic institutions and a neocolonial regime that hinders the establishment of effective accountability mechanisms as theorized by scholars of the liberal democratic models. It does that by focusing on the experiences of AMAN: The Palestinian Coalition for Accountability and Integrity. Originally formed in 2000 to combat corruption and enhance transparency, AMAN is now part of Transparency International’s global network. Building on frame analysis of documents and interviews with AMAN’s coalition members, the contribution explores how civic actors adapt and reinterpret SA in non-democratic settings.
