In contemporary Western society, a longstanding linguistic habit merges the concepts of sacrifice and martyrdom. This pervasive pattern infiltrates everyday language, the media, and scholarly discourse, fostering a deeply intertwined relationship between sacrifice and martyrdom, often elevated to a definitional level: martyrs are individuals who willingly sacrifice themselves for a higher cause. Instead of critically examining this widely accepted paradigm, the historiography of Christ religion has traditionally traced this association back to early Christian martyrdom literature. This paper aims to challenge the assumed solidity of this connection, demonstrating that the interplay between sacrifice and martyrdom is initially contingent, hesitant, loosely interconnected, overshadowed by other competing models of conceptual integration.

Abstract
In contemporary Western society, a longstanding linguistic habit merges the concepts of sacrifice and martyrdom. This pervasive pattern infiltrates everyday language, the media, and scholarly discourse, fostering a deeply intertwined relationship between sacrifice and martyrdom, often elevated to a definitional level: martyrs are individuals who willingly sacrifice themselves for a higher cause. Instead of critically examining this widely accepted paradigm, the historiography of Christ religion has traditionally traced this association back to early Christian martyrdom literature. This paper aims to challenge the assumed solidity of this connection, demonstrating that the interplay between sacrifice and martyrdom is initially contingent, hesitant, loosely interconnected, overshadowed by other competing models of conceptual integration.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
