“Gulf of Mexico” or “Gulf of America”? Are trans women “women”? Why is it so important for Trump and others to have hegemony over the use of words? The book offers a clearer definition of the phenomenon by which, through language, we can actively calibrate our interactions with one another and with the world. It draws on a wide range of voices—both classic and lesser-known—that have reflected on this phenomenon, and it gives a name to the space for maneuver that language affords us. The proposed term is “linguistic agency.” The book thus serves two purposes: a didactic one—to offer an introduction to the theme of linguistic agency; and a scientific one—to provide, through this introduction, a definition of the concept.The book is aimed at students and, more broadly, at scholars and researchers who, without necessarily having an in-depth knowledge of the subjects discussed, are interested in the question of what this distinctive linguistic capacity of ours enables us to do—a capacity that comes with a specific kind of power: the linguistic power to act. The topic, which is highly relevant to our present moment, is presented by a specialist in the field through clear and concise examples drawn from social anthropology, philosophy, and literature.

Il libro definisce meglio il fenomeno che, usando la lingua, possiamo attivamente calibrare le interazioni tra di noi e con il mondo, riferisce una vasta gamma di voci classici e meno classici, che hanno riflettuto sul fenomeno e dà un nome allo spazio di manovra che ci offre il linguaggio. La proposta è di chiamarlo linguistic agency. Il libro serve dunque un duplice scopo: uno scopo didattico – proporre un’introduzione al tema della «linguistic agency» –; uno scopo scientifico – attraverso tale introduzione, fornire una definizione del tema. Il libro si rivolge soprattutto a studentesse e studenti, e in generale studiose e studios* che, senza avere una conoscenza approfondita delle materie discusse, si interessano al problema di che cosa ci fa fare questa nostra particolarissima capacità linguistica, che viene con un determinato potere di azione: il potere linguistico di azione. Il tema di altissima rilevanza per il nostro presente viene presentato da una specialista del campo, riferendo esempi chiari e concisi dall’antropologia sociale, dalla filosofia e dalla letteratura.
