This chapter examines the role of non-profit institutions (NPIs) as drivers of social participation in Italy. Using ISTAT data on non-profit institutions per 10,000 inhabitants, the research reveals significant territorial disparities that generally persist over time. The study challenges simplistic interpretations of the North-South divide, arguing that non-profit development reflects complex institutional and socio-economic ecosystems rather than mere civic propensity differences. The findings suggest that non-profit organizations flourish in contexts characterized by stronger public intervention and higher socio-economic well-being, creating virtuous cycles of civic engagement.

Abstract
This chapter examines the role of non-profit institutions (NPIs) as drivers of social participation in Italy. Using ISTAT data on non-profit institutions per 10,000 inhabitants, the research reveals significant territorial disparities that generally persist over time. The study challenges simplistic interpretations of the North-South divide, arguing that non-profit development reflects complex institutional and socio-economic ecosystems rather than mere civic propensity differences. The findings suggest that non-profit organizations flourish in contexts characterized by stronger public intervention and higher socio-economic well-being, creating virtuous cycles of civic engagement.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
