Drawing on a work-in-progress, the scientific edition of a city-block in Pompeii, the paper proposes to reconsider a cold case of the research about the production, and economics, of painted walls in the Roman world: how were their panel pictures made? Only on sit or also in the workshop? How frequent was their re-use? Starting from the analysis of a specific case study (some panel paintings from the insula IX 8 in Pompeii), the aim is to show how the answers to those open questions can only come from a systematic review of the evidence, both material and documentary.

Abstract
Drawing on a work-in-progress, the scientific edition of a city-block in Pompeii, the paper proposes to reconsider a cold case of the research about the production, and economics, of painted walls in the Roman world: how were their panel pictures made? Only on sit or also in the workshop? How frequent was their re-use? Starting from the analysis of a specific case study (some panel paintings from the insula IX 8 in Pompeii), the aim is to show how the answers to those open questions can only come from a systematic review of the evidence, both material and documentary.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
