This chapter analyses two Lenten sermon collections written by Johannes Meder and Osvát Laskai/Osvaldus de Laskó. Both were Observant Franciscan friars active at the turn of the sixteenth century, shortly before the Reformation. While Meder and Laskai shared the idea that Lenten preaching was a strategic tool to shape the identity of the faithful, their sermons show different strategies. Reworking the parable of the prodigal son, Meder prioritized a communication that asked the faithful to develop a personal relationship with Christ, whereas Laskai traced a sort of geopolitics of the faith aimed at strengthening the Kingdom of Hungary in its fight against internal and external enemies. While also personal sensibilities played their part, the remarkable difference in tone and contents of these sermons responded to the specific political and cultural contexts in which the two friars lived.
