This chapter discusses contemporary higher education needs in the domain of language(s) and linguistics. Following some initial remarks on the interdisciplinarity of language studies and the methodological implications it has, the profile of language data and project specialist is described, intended as an overarching educational goal for a broad range of degree courses in languages and linguistics. The profile is built around seven thematic clusters of knowledge, skills and competences, and is divided into four more specific sub-profiles (language data analyst, language data scientist, language data manager, language project manager); its formulation is linked to projects in which the Department of General Linguistics of the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade took part over the last ten years, in particular the recently completed Erasmus+ strategic partnership UPSKILLS – UPgrading the SKIlls of Linguistics and Language Students. Some of the core knowledge and skills are considered in more detail, primarily those related to language data and linguistic analysis; it is emphasized that contemporary language professions require new knowledge, skills and competences (especially in relation to technology and statistics), but also adjustments in the old ones.

Abstract
This chapter discusses contemporary higher education needs in the domain of language(s) and linguistics.
