This essay aims to reconstruct in its essential lines the historical path that led to the drafting of the fundamental UNESCO convention of the Hague of 1954 and the subsequent implementing protocols, which still govern the protection of cultural heritage in armed conflicts, and to illustrate the consequent developments with par-ticular reference to the specific literature.
