An encounter with Claudio Magris (1939) writer, essayist, lecturer, columnist, correspondent, Doktorvater, even diner, reveals a marked propensity for anecdote. In the case of ‘light non-fiction’ Magris strategically places the episode, the parable, the story, the memory, at the opening or closing, so as to blur the distance between the author and the things on the page . It is a rhetorical architecture that, if need be, already shrugs off challenging topics at the outset - questions of poetics, the graft between cultural identity and nationhood, ideological extremism. Gregor von Rezzori (1914-1998) is aware of this propensity for anecdote. In a paper conserved in the Fondo Magris at the Archivio Viesseux, he agrees with his friend on the contents of an interview in the Corriere della Sera that would anticipate the publication in translation of the short story Ritorno a Cernpol .
