Challenging Fragmentation, Striving for Inclusion

The essay introduces the reading of the volume, highlighting its contents. Specifically, it considers how medieval European linguistic fragmentation is not to be considered a weakness in literary production but an asset of it. In fact, precisely because of linguistic fragmentation, translations of fundamental texts of medieval culture became increasingly necessary, but at the same time, works written in a specific vernacular language were translated into Latin or other languages so that they could be known in other linguistic circles. A multilingual and multilingual medieval perspective is thus restituted, a result achieved precisely because of the activity of translation.
