In the course of a long career Giacomo Ciamician (1857-1922) produced over four hundred notes or ‘memos’ ranging from spectroscopy to organic chemistry, from the chemistry of solutions to that of natural substances, from the chemical effect of light on organic substances to research into plant chemistry. Besides these there are some popularizing essays tackling crucial issues such as the unity of learning, cooperation among the sciences, the need to modernize Italian chemistry by a different physical layout of lab space and teaching space, as well as the need to re-think the relations between science, laboratory practice and industry.
