Common sense understands nostalgia as a bittersweet, individual memory of a positive experience in the past, destined never to be repeated due to the irreversibility of time or, in the case of space, to the impossibility of the physical reconnection to the desired place. To challenge this definition, in the last 20 years, various scholars adopting different epistemological perspectives, methodologies and interests have produced numerous theories and empirical analyses of nostalgia. This work has focused not only on its individual mannerisms but also on its cultural and collective effects and especially its political and ethical implications in relation to group identity formations

Abstract

Common sense understands nostalgia as a bittersweet, individual memory of a positive experience in the past, destined never to be repeated due to the irreversibility of time or, in the case of space, to the impossibility of the physical reconnection to the desired place. To challenge this definition, in the last 20 years, various scholars adopting different epistemological perspectives, methodologies and interests have produced numerous theories and empirical analyses of nostalgia. This work has focused not only on its individual mannerisms but also on its cultural and collective effects and especially its political and ethical implications in relation to group identity formations
