The Aesthetics of Labour offers a comprehensive survey of the bourgeoning literary output produced by a group of Chinese rural-urban migrant workers based in Picun, in Beijing. Divided in two parts, the book first situates the group within historical traditions and long-standing issues of working-class cultural production in China, and then moves on to discuss five of its most outstanding authors. Overall, the book aims to investigate the formative process of the individuals who are regarded as worker authors. What challenges and obstacles do they face when they want to start making something more meaningful than depleting their energies on the assembly line? To what extent and in what ways do their class background influence what they write, and how they are read?

Abstract
The Aesthetics of Labour offers a comprehensive survey of the bourgeoning literary output produced by a group of Chinese rural-urban migrant workers based in Picun, in Beijing. Divided in two parts, the book first situates the group within historical traditions and long-standing issues of working-class cultural production in China, and then moves on to discuss five of its most outstanding authors. Overall, the book aims to investigate the formative process of the individuals who are regarded as worker authors. What challenges and obstacles do they face when they want to start making something more meaningful than depleting their energies on the assembly line? To what extent and in what ways do their class background influence what they write, and how they are read?I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
