Words in Paradise: forms and ways of Dante’s onomaturgical creativity The extraordinary expressive versatility of Dante’s multilingualism is manifested throughout the whole Comedy, even though the tones shift as we go from the “comic” of infernal songs to the “tragic” summits of Paradise. If we refer in particular to the lexicon, in the last canticle the onomaturgical activity of Dante, known as the “Father of the Italian Language”, is concretized above all in a huge introduction of first-hand Latinisms (in conjunction with the general stylistic elevation and with the themes of a philosophical and theological nature treated). And, at the same time, many voices from different registers appear for the first time, attributable to the wide range of the language’s varieties. Some words created by Dante immediately had great resonance and are rooted in his contemporany language. Others, on the other hand, remain with very little or no echo in the fourteenth century, but then resurface in subsequent historical phases, until they arrive in contemporary Italian. Through the reconstruction of the semantic evolutions and the dynamics of diffusion and transmission of these words, it is possible to measure both the effectiveness of Dante’s creativity through the centuries and the relevance of his neologisms.
