The article is about the figure of Lucius Munatius Plancus, Caesar's general in the Alpine region and a friend and correspondent of Cicero, who in considered the founder of Augusta Raurica, the ancestor city of modern Basel. Moving from the origin story of the city, the article presents the tradition and cult of Plancus as conditor urbis, instituted by the humanist Beatus Rhenanus, and analyses the tributes made to Plancus by the city, in monuments as well as literary and historical works.
