The paper focuses on the incorporation of the cult of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin within a Sardinian retablo and what this issue tells us about the devotional and stylistic models traveling from the Southern Netherlands to Renaissance Iberia and Mediterranean islands–specifically the connections between the paintings of Pietro Cavaro (for Cagliari) and the altarpieces painted by Quentin Metsys (Lisbon) and Jan Joest van Calcar (Palencia). It also reflects on the transformation of iconographic patterns and miraculous images in the greater Iberian context, namely from a transatlantic perspective, in which pathos and consensus continue to be particularly pivotal for strengthening the sense of belonging in the new Hispanic communities in the Americas.

Abstract
The paper focuses on the incorporation of the cult of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin within a Sardinian retablo and what this issue tells us about the devotional and stylistic models traveling from the Southern Netherlands to Renaissance Iberia and Mediterranean islands–specifically the connections between the paintings of Pietro Cavaro (for Cagliari) and the altarpieces painted by Quentin Metsys (Lisbon) and Jan Joest van Calcar (Palencia). It also reflects on the transformation of iconographic patterns and miraculous images in the greater Iberian context, namely from a transatlantic perspective, in which pathos and consensus continue to be particularly pivotal for strengthening the sense of belonging in the new Hispanic communities in the Americas.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
