The text deals with how Mies van der Rohe developed his "vision" of architecture in relation to the notion of "spirit of the times". It was in the year 1928 that Mies van der Rohe published one of his finest essays written for a conference held at the Staatliche Kunstbibliothek in Berlin, entitled: The Preconditions of Architectural Work. In this lecture brimming with aphoristic phrases, certain highly significant statements stand out: «The building art can only be unlocked from a spiritual centre and can only be understood as a living process». Or: «We stand at the turning point of the times. Everything points to a spiritual aim». What emerges insistently from this essay is the reference to a spiritual order underlying the architectural phenomenon which is strongly related to the life force. But above all there is Mies’ famous saying: «The building art is in reality always the spatial execution of spiritual decisions».

Abstract
But above all there is Mies’ famous saying: «The building art is in reality always the spatial execution of spiritual decisions».File | Dimensione | Formato | |
