This epitaph is dated to the 4th-5th century AD on a palaeographic basis. Also dating back to late antiquity is the expression ἔνθα/ἐνθάδε κατακεῖται, which recurs in only another inscription from Catania dated to the 5th-6th century AD (IMusCatania 175 = ISic003282), but it is frequent in late antiquity or Byzantine inscriptions from Asia Minor and Black Sea (e.g. IMT Kyz Propinseln 1366, IK Sinope 191, IOSPE 5.72, 267, 268). The name of the deceased is Φιλάρετος according to Ferrua, Εὕρετος or Ἄρετος according to Korhonen (on which see Solin 1982: 1271-1272, 1280).
