<p>The epitaph presents the traditional structure with the name of the deceased, the indication of his age (with the verb <foreign xml:lang="grc">ζάω</foreign> in the aorist form) and a second sentence with the name of the dedicant in the nominative form and the dedication verb (<foreign xml:lang="grc">ποιέω</foreign> in the aorist form). The formulae and the palaeography are characteristic of Catania and of a 2nd-century CE dating, according to Korhonen (2004: 229; contra Manganaro 1959: 242, who dated the inscription to the 4th cent. CE). The epitaph was dedicated to a libertus Saboukis Kallimorphos by his patron Saboukis Zoilos (<foreign xml:lang="grc">πάτρων</foreign> is not part of the proper name of the dedicant, as Manganaro suggested: see J. and L. Robert, BE 1961: 268 nr. 861). The patron belonged to the <foreign xml:lang="la">gens Sabucia</foreign>, who seems to have owned several latifundia in Sicily, as numerous toponyms attest: see Manganaro 1959.</p>
