The thermal performances of three different heat sinks of similar design used to cool triacs are compared in terms of thermal resistance. The transient behaviour of the heat sinks is analysed to obtain the parameters used in a lumped parameters model. The obtained results allowed a series of power on/off simulations and the prediction has been compared with experimental data under the same conditions. It is demonstrated that the simple parameter model can successfully replicate the actual thermal history of the heat sink and can thus be used as a valid predictive tool to assess the trend of the maximum temperature versus time for any kind of power cycle.

Abstract

The thermal performances of three different heat sinks of similar design used to cool triacs are compared in terms of thermal resistance. The transient behaviour of the heat sinks is analysed to obtain the parameters used in a lumped parameters model. The obtained results allowed a series of power on/off simulations and the prediction has been compared with experimental data under the same conditions. It is demonstrated that the simple parameter model can successfully replicate the actual thermal history of the heat sink and can thus be used as a valid predictive tool to assess the trend of the maximum temperature versus time for any kind of power cycle.
