The paper reports the results of the experimental activities carried out to evaluate the agronomic, environmental, and energy sustainability of the biomass production by non-food crops irrigated with different kinds of treated wastewater. Four different research units planted and monitored the same four main herbaceous species. To determine the energy yield of each species in the different units, the crop yield, the moisture content, and the heating value were measured in three different harvest periods in two years. To evaluate the possibility to use these biomasses as fuel for direct combustion, the combustion characteristics were analysed. Environmental impact evaluations were obtained by an analyser and the solid residues were measured with a single evaluation performed at the end of each daily test. The test results allowed an evaluation of the energy potentiality of the biomass tested in different Italian regions.
