This chapter provides a discussion on the nature of qualitative research designs in the field of education. It is argued that empirical research in education, in addition to advancing knowledge production, is oriented towards improving practices and informing policies. In doing so, however, the approach of evidence-based in education is seriously questioned. Alternatively, two different but complementary patterns of qualitative research designs for studies in education- research in education and educational research - are presented. In particular, major designs adhering to these patterns are explored by especially highlighting participatory approaches and action research as emblematic cases of educational inquiry. Subsequently, two examples on how these patterns can be complemented in a comprehensive design are then provided. Finally, the chapter concludes by addressing social justice research, a new theoretical angle for qualitative studies in education, especially appropriate for educational research.
