e-Photon/ONe is a network of excellence focusing on optical networking and funded by the EU in the framework of the VI Framework Program. One of the instruments implemented in e-Photon/ONe are the Virtual Departments, working groups that gather researchers around big topics in optical networking to exchange results, promote joint research and identify new research topics. Virtual Department 1 is devoted to core optical networks and this paper reports the preliminary results and some comments on the first year of activity.
