The story of George Best could be read as a tragic private affair if it did not intersect with some cruxes of British history in the 1960s and 1970s: from the Northern Irish question (Best was born in a Belfast not yet torn apart by sectarian struggles) to the appearance of a young generation that found itself endowed with money and success. At the end of the 1960s few of the hopes for social change had become real, but that decade is essential to understand contemporary England. In this context, football and its protagonists also changed: Best became a celebrity, an object of interest for the media, entangled in an ambiguous relationship with them.

Abstract

The story of George Best could be read as a tragic private affair if it did not intersect with some cruxes of British history in the 1960s and 1970s: from the Northern Irish question (Best was born in a Belfast not yet torn apart by sectarian struggles) to the appearance of a young generation that found itself endowed with money and success. At the end of the 1960s few of the hopes for social change had become real, but that decade is essential to understand contemporary England. In this context, football and its protagonists also changed: Best became a celebrity, an object of interest for the media, entangled in an ambiguous relationship with them.
