Byzantine Cultures as Reflected in Miniature Painting and Italy: Presence and Stylistic References

The study begins with a description and a stylistic analysis of a Byzantine manuscripts in Bologna's Archiginnasio Library, around 1100. The second section describes the importance of the relationships between Bologna and Armenia during the 13-14th centuries, through a religious community of Basilian monks in the town. In the third part, a survey of the most recent theories about the so-called "secondo stile" of Bolognese book illumination is presented, together with a detailed group of examples of Byzantine iconographic and stylistic connections. The last part is another stylistic analysis of a 12th century Byzantine manuscript now in Bologna, whose history is directly connected with Romenian Principalities.
