Most of the durum wheat cultivars marketed in Italy are either susceptible to Soilborne cereal mosaic virus (SBCMV) or exhibit intermediate reactions to this virus. Indeed, only sixteen of the 123 cultivars so far tested demonstrated a high degree of resistance to SBCMV in terms of symptom expression, virus concentrarion and agronomic performance. Interestingly, at least eight (cvs. Ares, Neodur, Iride, Svevo, Saragolla, Dylan, Tiziana and Levante) of the sixteen resistant cultivars we identified derive from cv. Edmore, bred about thirty years ago in North Dakota. Moreover, in a different set of field experiments carried out on durum wheats from various parts of the world nine other cultivars derived from cultivar Edmore were found to possess high levels of resistance to SBCMV, suggesting that this cultivar and a high proportion of its derivatives carry a few highly efficacious genes, easily transmitted to their progeny even the absence of a conscious selection pression for resistance to SBCMV. In order to test this hypothesis we assayed, in a field with natural inoculum sources of SBCMV situated near Cadriano (Bologna), hundred and sixty-one lines obtained by single-seed-descent from a cross between durum wheat cvs. “Cirillo” (highly susceptible) and “Neodur” (a highly resistant Edmore derivative).
