Urbanization is perhaps one of the single most relevant traits in the development of the human species. The number of people who live in urban realities is constantly increasingly, and human conurbations are increasingly big. They also increasingly attempt at providing a cure for their widely perceived ills: sedentary life, lack of bodily expression, the subjugation of human natural bodily needs to large bureaucracies, with severe consequences on the health, fitness and ultimately well-being of the urban dweller. In this article, I consider how bodies and space are addressed in the field of health-oriented active leisure activities as promoted by commercial fitness culture.

Abstract

Urbanization is perhaps one of the single most relevant traits in the development of the human species. The number of people who live in urban realities is constantly increasingly, and human conurbations are increasingly big. They also increasingly attempt at providing a cure for their widely perceived ills: sedentary life, lack of bodily expression, the subjugation of human natural bodily needs to large bureaucracies, with severe consequences on the health, fitness and ultimately well-being of the urban dweller. In this article, I consider how bodies and space are addressed in the field of health-oriented active leisure activities as promoted by commercial fitness culture.
