The paper approachs the issue "Torture" from a historical perspective. It looks back to renaissance and enlightenment debates about torture as a mean of interrogation, and finds disturbing parallels between those debates and today's political situation. In this context it is particularly instructive the argument of Ch. Thomasius about the political character of torture: it is not simply a mean of interrogation, but a tool for the powerful against their enemies.

Abstract

The paper approachs the issue "Torture" from a historical perspective. It looks back to renaissance and enlightenment debates about torture as a mean of interrogation, and finds disturbing parallels between those debates and today's political situation. In this context it is particularly instructive the argument of Ch. Thomasius about the political character of torture: it is not simply a mean of interrogation, but a tool for the powerful against their enemies.
