This article traces a profile of the journey made by the Baron of Montesquieu in Italy, between 1728 and 1729, with the aim of completing his intellectual formation, to better understand the peoples and their customs, and to collect materials for his future writings. During this journey (whose report was only published posthumously) Montesquieu establishes numerous relationships with personalities from the intellectual and cultural world. But he also visits some libraries and archives, which he then writes about in his travel notebook.
